Election Platform and Advocacy programs

Now that we have been “sent out to conquer” the medical world, we need to still have an anchor to our being a group, a class, and still one ASMPH. Being the newcomers, we still face a lot of challenges, criticisms, and other remarks from our detractors. However, as one batch I do believe that we would be able to overcome these obstacles and in the end gather the praises of our soon to be colleagues.

In line with this, I do believe that a strong leader is needed to bring us all together as one especially with the new hurdle that is coming our way. Aside from this, systems should be put in place to allow better communication and better coordination as one batch. As such, I humbly present what I plan for our batch if given the opportunity to be the batch executive office.

COMMUNICATION

Being a batch representative for interns would entail a lot of communication between the different group leaders, the school, and the hospitals we rotate in. In this aspect, having just one person to be in charge would lead to delayed communications and/or miscommunications. Our concerns might also become unnoticed due to poor communication channels. In light of this, we need to come up with systems for communication. Here I will create a system for communication where there will be more than one person in charge for the whole batch. Furthermore, there would also be utilization of different forms of communication such as pigeon hole systems, facebook, and other social media. In this way, better communication would lead to better feedback as well as better and faster relay of messages.

COORDINATION

From our year as clerks, we saw a lot of nuances about the system that we want to change. We were also able to see the different aspects of our curriculum which we felt were lacking in terms of preparing us for the “real world.” As your batch representative, I hope to be able to address this through better coordination with the school and the different hospitals we rotate in. Here, we could come up as a batch with the list of different seminars or lectures which we feel would be necessary, and I as your leader would push for these to be accommodated by the admin. One example would be board exam preparations in which we could get more lectures or reviews in subjects we feel our curriculum is lacking. Other topics for seminars of lectures could also include discussions about future career plans and what specialty would be best suited for each of us.

COOPERATION

Now that we will be in our final year of medical school, we have to be able to commemorate the different aspects of our school life through a yearbook. Our memories would be celebrated and immortalized in this yearbook, thus it has to be made to last the years and it has to be something that we would be proud of showing others in the future. Therefore, I feel that since our internship would take a lot of our time, it would be more effective if we cooperate as a batch and come together to create different subgroups for the creation of our yearbook. Greater cooperation would also be needed to help each other in the hopes of passing the board examinations. As such, I propose to create a system wherein we can create our own reviews through collection of different study materials such as ebooks, and different sample exams from different sources. In this project, there would also be a creation of a system wherein we can ask each other short questions for review.

The task ahead of us is great, but together as one batch, I do believe that we would be able to overcome them.

Election Platform and Advocacy programs

Integrate and Communicate. Technology and Tradition

Programs:

  1. YL8 Legacy Book

Being a pioneer in the medical field, we recognize that the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health has a unique identity of its own, having to pave its own way in the field of medicine. One of the largest dilemmas confronted by each batch is the uncertainty of the future. In order to help the future generations of ASMPH medical clerks and interns, we endeavor to create a legacy book that is compilation of different practical advices and guides, from ASMPH clerks and interns in different partner institutions of ASMPH for the clerkship and internship years, that will serve as a rough guide for future clerks and interns.

  1. Phone Tree Project

To ensure that everyone in the batch is aware and updated with regards to current and future events in ASMPH, as well as important batch announcements, an effective communication channel is needed. We hope to disseminate information within and outside the batch faster and more efficiently by setting up a “phone tree” that makes use of the Internet (Twitter, Plurk, Facebook and Email) and SMS technologies to its outmost potential.

  1. Batch Med Board Reviewers

To help the students prepare for the Boards, an electronic reviewer covering the different subjects is proposed, that starts off with a review of Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology, and develops later on to Case-based Questions on Patient Diagnosis and Management, that can be accessed and downloaded from the internet, and viewed through mobile devices. Questions for the reviewers will be taken from various sources (including questions asked during rotations).

  1. “Check Mail” Endorsements

Proper and complete documentation of patient endorsements can be difficult and time-consuming, but this ensures that there are no problems during rotation changes between groups, and facilitates for the continuity of patient care.

Instead of depending on pen-and-paper or over-the-phone endorsements, online endorsement forms (via Google docs) will be made available to all groups leaders to complete and made available to the next rotation group through e-mail.

Election Platform and Advocacy programs

Continuity

In order to ease the transition from one Student Council to the next, I plan to acquire all documents from the previous councils. This would help the current officers to continue, change, or improve existing policies, services, projects, etc., and to build on these for a more effective administration. In turn, all documents for academic year 2012 to 2013 will be turned over to the next set of officers.

I also plan to continue the formulation of the Student Council’s Code of Internal Procedures or CIP.

Accountability for Student and Alumni

As the Secretary-General, I plan to get hold of a school database. I would like to urge all the year levels, with the help of their respective Executive Officers, to come up with a standardized batch directory. These will be compiled and used for future reference or when the need arises such as when unforeseeable events happen and the council would like to ensure the safety of everyone.

Also, this year, the pioneer batch of the school will be graduating and will soon be taking up residency elsewhere, if not in the Medical City. However, their graduation should not terminate their affiliation with the school. As such, it is important that the Student Council still keeps in touch with them in order to keep them involved in certain school activities and/or to keep them informed about the affairs of their alma mater. Should they also need any assistance from the Student Council or from the school, our doors will always be open.

Project Evaluation and Documentation

There are several stages in project management; and it definitely does not end with implementation and execution. More often than not, evaluation and documentation of projects are taken for granted when they are just as important. In this light, I would like to establish a more effective way of necessitating these steps in the management of all school activities.

I believe that not only can it showcase the organizers’ fruits of labor, but it can also gauge the success and the impact of the project. Most importantly, it can help the next batch of project heads in planning and in improving the activity based on actual evaluation surveys conducted the previous year.

Information Dissemination and School Calendar

The school population is growing by the year; and it is getting more and more difficult to keep everyone informed and updated. Not to mention, we barely see the ASMPH clerks (YL8) and interns (YL9) within the campus. As the Secretary-General, I plan to capitalize on all available media (i.e. Facebook, Yahoo Groups, Twitter) and be more aggressive in promoting the upcoming activities of the organizations and of the school as a whole. Hopefully, by doing so, I will be able to reach majority of the population, if not everyone. I would also like to involve the year level Executive Officers in this endeavor.

It is likewise important to keep the school calendar available and accessible for everyone. Aside from the monthly calendar located at the lobby of the school, it will also be made available in the Student Council InfoSite.

Election Platform and Advocacy programs

Should I be elected Secretary-General, I would do my utmost to realize these three goals within the Student Council. They are realistic, simplified, and achievable

Visibility

  • Reveal the programs and projects of the Student Council in the manner of most possible impact and coverage through the use of social media, website creation, posters, and marketing campaigns. Documentation will be put to good use.
  • Raise the brand name and identity of the Student Council to something instantly recognizable by the student population.
  • Transparency in the decision-making processes of the Student Council.

Involvement

  • Create successful projects by effectively reaching as many students as possible, deliver cues to the action desired, and to gather quality feedback from the student population.
  • Give avenues for the inclusion of more hands and ideas from the student body, and therefore truly represent the voice of the school population

Synergy

  • Become a cooperative energy in establishing organized and clear-cut systems within the Student Council as well as without. This will facilitate faster and easier processing, and more time for collective ingenuity in projects.
  • Aid in the common goal of the organization, creating a balance between order and creativity inside the student council and as well as in the involvement of other individuals and organizations.

Election Platform and Advocacy programs

As Internals Vice-President, I plan to focus on POTENTIAL.

As ASMPH continues to grow in all aspects, there is a need to identify, cultivate and maximize the potential that exists within the ASMPH community. And this I plan to do through the maintenance of a supportive environment to foster effective leadership, proper communication, and appropriate partnerships within the council, the student population and thus translate to the larger ASMPH community.

Support + Community

- Promote Community-building both formally and informally within the council and amongst the different batches of the school.

- Creation of a project head pool across year levels at the beginning of the school year to empower and develop their potential.

- Creation of systems for Board Reviews for the graduating batch.

- Maintain open communications with the council and within the community to provide an avenue for verbalizing other needs of the community.

Competencies + Partnerships

- Leadership development seminar series in partnership with institutions whose competency is leadership, to ensure proper training and equipping of students leaders within the school.

- Maintain transparent and effective partnerships within the student council (board and its auxiliary teams) that will translate to a more visible, efficient and appropriate council for the school.

Health + Leadership

With the introduction of more students into the community, there is a substantial growth in the population and diversity of the school – per year level, per auxiliary SC teams, per student organizations. This growth will be managed effectively through the deliberate identification and development of leadership potential within the school through the initiatives mentioned above; an avenue for the ASMPH student to concretely emulate what it means to be an ASMPH future doctor in the present time.

Election Platform and Advocacy programs

Enrollment in ASMPH is a commitment to the discernment process that aligned what we want, what kind of doctor we aspire to be, and what society at large needs. Every ASMPH student deserves that opportunity to constantly re-assess and concretize this commitment, making the promise of the Atenean Doctor of the Future a reality, NOW.

With the ASMPH community, let’s renew and realize our commitment through:

1. CO-OWNERSHIP

Concretizing any commitment entails ownernship. Let’s strengthen the community relationships that the previous Student Council (SC) has established. But more importantly, co-ownership should be established across the different units of the SC, integrating and focusing the activities while performing their individual functions. Planning and transparency across all units is instrumental in making the current system streamlined.

-              Establish feedback systems (management, public health, academic formation)

-              Transparency in all processes

2. CO-FORMATION

Co-formation entails commitment of our roles as proactive contributors to our formation as the Atenean Doctor of the Future. Let’s explore and prioritize these avenues for concretizing our commitment through different networks:

-              Different Ateneo units (Loyola Schools, Professional Schools)

-              APMC-SN

-              NGOs and other institutions related to health

3. PUTTING ASMPH ON THE MAP

We’ve made ourselves known through the different activites of the APMC-SN like Palarong Med and Medgroove, Medrhythmmia. Let’s put ASMPH on the map as the medical school of hollistic physician leaders and social catalysts.

-              Partnership for Health through Pasig City (community involvement complementing academic formation as early as YL5, continuing through YL9)

-              Continue the Blue Platito Advocacy as flagship campaign of the ASMPH for its projects

What does the Class of 2015 have to show for the past school year? We’ve perfected the art of making transes. We’ve produced some of the best videos in the history of med school. We hosted an uber fun acquaintance party and an unforgettable Christmas party (despite the falling electric post right outside our campus). And of course, we’re surviving through the notorious Year Level 6! Sleepless nights, trans towers to read and an unbelievable amount of gene mutations to memorize. How did we achieve all this? We went through it all together, supporting each other.

Our batch has a very good system in place. We have committees that are effective for achieving our goals and encouraging us to participate in our batch activities. Let’s keep these, reinforce them and probably modify them to suit the differences that YL7 will bring. Since YL7 is quite different from YL6 (more patient encounters, LEC, SGDs galore), we’ll need a very solid bridge between us, the Year Level Coordinators and the administrative staff. I can ensure that our concerns are heard by our faculty and that their communications will be efficiently made known to everyone in the batch. Just to make sure that everyone is heard, we can have periodic trans group leader meetings to discuss any issues that may arise, and of course, anyone can approach me, anytime, with anything.

In addition to making sure our academic affairs go smoothly, should we not share our numerous skills and talents with the rest of the school and even the community? The answer is yes. Even if we feel like there isn’t enough time for academics, it won’t take much more to help out. Let’s keep participating in different organizations and Student Council events. We can extend our help to the community through small means such as holding medicine drives or mini-outreaches throughout the year.

We are an AMAZING batch. Let’s stay together as a batch and achieve even more!

Election Platform and Advocacy programs

1. Constitutional review and update; push for fair and clear laws

Next year, the constitution is scheduled to be reviewed and updated. This is this the perfect time to clarify and straighten out vague areas of the law, whose manner of implementation may have caused controversy of late.

To resolve these problem areas and prevent future mishaps, students, faculty, and administrative staff should flesh things out, negotiate, and agree upon definitions (ex. plagiarism) and making specific the manner laws are carried out (ex. notification for an administrative hearing should be given at least 1 week in advance with an option to schedule in light of an exam, etc).

2. Improve and release student magna carta

With the student magna carta still in draft form, students are left vulnerable in areas not covered by the existing law, making this work imperative.

3. Advocate clerk and intern rights

As more pass through clerkship and internship, special needs and issues arise. These should be tackled by creating and updating student rights and laws.
